This little girl has been on my mind this week. Kate is a little girl from Arizona who was diagnosed with brain cancer in June, 2009. She recently celebrated her 7th birthday, & shortly after her doctors discovered that the cancer has returned.

Lately, when I get frustrated at my little problems, I stop myself & remember that I am blessed. I think of Kate, & I realize how small & insignificant my problems are compared to what she is going through.

My Daddy always says that no matter what you are going through, you can always look around & find someone who is worse off than you. So, be thankful, no matter what you may be facing, despite your problems, trial & circumstances.

Try not to grumble, fuss & complain about every little thing. There are more important things to worry about. Instead of focusing so much on the things you cannot change...say a little prayer for someone who just might need it more than you. You never know...someone might be doing the same for you!

New Name

So, as you can tell, I decided to make a name change.
I've seen a few blogs with the same name as mine,
so I thought I'd go with something different.
I remember looking at some color samples one time,
and Buttercup & Lagoon were two of the available colors.
Buttercup was a dark yellow, and Lagoon was a bright blue.
I love these two colors together,
and I liked the way it sounded when you say them together...Buttercup Lagoon.
It sounds like the name of a cute little thrift shop or bakery.
And now, it's the name of my blog.

So.....it's been more than 3 months since I've posted a new post. It's weird. I've been through a lot in the last 3 months. And I've really had a ton of free time to post. Honestly, I could've posted a new post every. single. day. I could've posted 3 & 4 posts per day. I've seriously had that much time on my hands. Anyway.....the time has past. It's over...done. I can't go back & change it. From this day forward I will...um, move forward! So, here's to pushing forth!

Lemon Addiction Therapy

I have a slight lemon addiction! I love lemon cake & lemon cookies, & in the last two days I bought 6 bottles of lemon vanilla lotion, 2 tubes of lemon & pomegranate lip gloss & 1 tube of lemon lip gloss from Bath & Body Works!

I also LOVE Shaken Iced Tea Lemonade from Starbuck {thanks to Ashley Ann}! In fact, every {week}day for the last 2 weeks I have gotten this drink. I have decided that this is pretty much due to the fact that I've stopped drinking Cokes, so I need something to compensate. Also, it's summertime, it's hot, I'm stucking sitting in an office at a desk everyday, so I deserve a treat at the end of the day! Nevertheless, I need help!

p.s. The lemon lip gloss will make you crave lemon
cake from Starbucks {another lemony treat I ♥}!!

Coming Home

A few weeks ago, around Memorial Day, The Pioneer Woman gave out a photography assignment. The subject: Coming Home. This subject came about from the previous subject which was Happiness {many photos of men & women coming home from overseas, which fell under this subject, were submitted}. I know I am not the only one touched by this series of photos. I'm not ashamed to say I was moved to tears on numerous occasions.

I wanted to submit a photo for this assignment. My brother-in-law is in the National Guard, & over a year ago he was in Iraq. I was not there, though, when he came home, so I had not pictures of him "coming home".

Then I remembered the above picture.

Pictured in the above photo is my Grandaddy {far right} & his three brothers, Johnnie, Willie & McKinley. This photo was taken after World War II. My Grandaddy and his three brothers all fought in the war. When they came home, the newspaper did an article about these four young men. They interviewed my great-grandmother and she told how she was blessed because four of her six sons went to war, and all four of her sons came home safe.

I've always loved to hear my Grandaddy & Uncle Johnnie tell stories about old times. I especially love hearing Grandaddy talk about his times stationed on Attu Island. And I'll always cherish this picture of these four brave men. I am forever grateful that they were able to come back home!

Young & Old

I took these pictures a week ago when me, my parents, my sister & my little niece visited my Grandad. I took the pictures because that's what we do when family gets together (especially when we visit Grandad...these moments are the ones we will cherish). When I was looking at them the next day I realized.....

Haven is the youngest member of our family.

And Grandaddy is the oldest member of our family.

I hope that, when Haven gets old enough to understand who the elderly gentleman in these pictures are, she will cherish these pictures with all her heart.

And there's a certain part of me that believes (and desperately hopes) that her young mind will lovingly recall these precious moments of making precious memories!

Chocolate Craving

Since I've started trying new recipes and baking from scratch (almost 2 years ago when my boyfriend got me a Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas!), I have tried only two brownie recipes. I have felt bad about this because my boyfriend has always loved brownies! For some reason, the two recipes I tried did not turn out good at all! So, I've kept looking, all the while thinking I'll just go ahead and buy some Betty Crocker mix at the grocery store and be done with it.

Then I came across this recipe from My Baking Addiction. The title said they're AMAZING, so I decided to try them. And, guess what?? They are pretty amazing! They didn't last long at all. I think they would be even better (if that's possible) with chocolate frosting on top!!!

Try them.....I'm sure you'll love them!

I am, of course, referring to my To-Do list. I keep so many lists, so many little scraps of paper, here, there, everywhere. I make a list, I lose it. I make a list, I forget I made it. I make a list, I'm just too tired to do anything. Anyway.....I got one thing checked off, something that's been on my list since Christmas: framing my Tollipop print! I had planned to take it to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and have it custom framed. Then I decided I would find a frame and do it myself.

Well, last week, frames and mats were on sale at Hobby Lobby, so I went in Friday intent on buying what I needed. I looked and looked without really seeing one I liked. I decided to look on the clearance aisle and found this frame marked down from it's original price of $30 to $6!!! YAY! It's way big and scuffed up, but I think the scuff marks add to the appeal of the print. I got two different sized mats in two different colors, and, thankfully they worked well!

I really like the way it turned out! Next step.....hang it high!

Tollipop

There's this wonderful little blog that I visit called Tollipop. Isn't that the most wonderful name?! Kirsten is the writer of Tollipop. She is the type of woman I would love to have a best friend. She writes, she tells lovely stories and she has three beautiful and talented daughters. In 2008, Kirsten started a project called "hundred dresses project". Her goal is to paint one hundred girls and write a story to go with each girl. Charming! She also has an Etsy shop where she sells prints of her paintings.

I had my eye on the above print for the longest. So, when it came time to make a wish list for Christmas, this was put at the very top! Shawn wanted to buy an original, but I told him that would probably be impossible since he waited until just a few weeks before Christmas to start his shopping. Of course, I was right. I was satisfied, though, with the print. I love it! There are two others that are still on my wish list, one of which is no longer listed.

Shawn told me when I opened this particular package {and yes, I did squeal when I saw what it was!} that he emailed Kirsten several times before he placed his order. He said she was very sweet and very helpful. He asked if she could write a little note to me....

and she did! Let me just say right now that I cherish this note just as much as I cherish my Tollipop print! She also wrote a little note on the back of the print, which, by the way, is titled "What page are you on?". My plan is to hang it over my bookshelf. Next step: find the perfect frame!

Wooden Elephant...Take 3

So...here's the wooden elephant...finished! I saw this tutorial a while back. My sister is expecting a baby girl {Haven} in the next few weeks. We gave her a baby shower this past Saturday. When we started planning the shower, I knew I wanted to make this elephant. It made the cutest cake topper! Thanks to Dad for all his help! Now Baby Haven will have her own unique push toy when she gets older, and hopefully she will cherish it for what it is...a gift from the ♥!

I know almost everyone {in the blog world} knows The Pioneer Woman. I love her site! I love reading about life on the ranch. I love her photography. I love her recipes. Oh, how I love her recipes. She makes cooking look so easy. So, I guess you heard about her cookbook? I bought it soon after it came out. I've bookmarked over half of the recipes. My favorite thing about the Pioneer Woman's recipes is the step-by-step photos. They are so handy. In the last two weeks I've made three of her recipes. I plan on making more in the coming weeks!

Egg-in-a-HoleThese are so simple, yet very delicious....and convenient. When I eat fried eggs, I eat just the yolk. It's my favorite part! With these, I eat the entire egg. No more wasting!

Buttered Rosemary RollsDELICIOUS! That's the only word to describe these rolls. I baked them at 11 p.m. one night. The house smelled delicious!

Chocolate Sheet CakeRee calls this "The Best Chocolate Sheet Cake. Ever." This cake didn't last long around our place. It really is the best. I've been looking for a good chocolate cake recipe, and I think I finally found it! I'm glad I finally tried this recipe.

On another note, during this time each year, St. Jude has their Thanks and Giving campaign. Anyone that knows me knows that St. Jude is a cause that I support with all of my heart. The Thanks and Giving campaign urges everyone to "Give thanks for the healthy kids in your life, and give to those who are not." This past Friday night I watched My Sister's Keeper with a young friend of mine. I am now more than ever thankful for the healthy kids in my life. And I will keep giving to those who are not in hopes that my little bit will help make a difference.

My Mom's birthday was the weekend before Halloween, but we celebrated at church on Halloween night. We already had a gathering planned, so we did it all together.

Friday night I asked Mom what her favorite color was. {{Pink}} I didn't know this. Does that make me a bad daughter?!?

I used this tutorial to make the flower. I love it!

Oh, and I don't have a picture of Mom with the cake because she's very impatient. She was ready to get the cake cut and distributed lest the ghosts and goblins got too restless! At least I got the cake.

It is a USA original series, though, and 3 of my other favorite shows are USA original series {Burn Notice, Royal Pains & Monk}. This new one was quite entertaining. My friend, Lauren, and I made this cake for her Mom, Debby.
Debby loves zebra print, and red is her favorite color.

This was put together really quickly, so of course it didn't come out exactly how I wanted. I think it's cute, though. Next time we'll make it look more like a zebra. Debby liked it, though, & it tasted delicious, so I guess it was perfect!

Gone Fishing

There's nothing like being out on the lake.
It's the best place to read a good book.

There's always so much to see.
The lake is also the perfect place to take some beautiful pictures.

Shawn caught two of these little guys.
Then he caught their big brother.
He doesn't look very happy.
In fact, he looks mighty grumpy.
After a while it started getting cloudy.
So, I drove us back.
{That was fun!}
As always, it was a fun time.
And don't worry. All of the fish were released.

I went to Chili's twice yesterday to support St. Jude. The first time I went with my sister & brother-in-law, Anna & Simeon. The second time I went with Shawn.

Shawn & I took a little road trip the other day. I wanted to go to a cake supply store about 2 hours from where I live. We ate at Joe's Crab Shack. I got crab cake sliders & french fries. I love crab cakes, & Joe's has the best fries!

We had church last week for 5 nights in a row, plus Sunday school on Sunday.
I decided I needed to start wearing more of the clothes in my closet that have found their way to the very back. It's been fun so far. I figure I can just be unique and embrace my individuality. That's the great thing about clothes; they are able to serve as a sort of creative outlet. What better way is there to express yourself?

A few weeks ago I discovered a new cooking blog, Whisk Kid. This site is full of delicious looking sweet things: cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc. And the pictures are wonderful.

I made these cookies on Labor Day. They didn't last long. I think I'm going to start calling Ricky the Cookie Monster. He always wants the cookies. I think he ate four of these as soon as they were ready.

If you like lemon, you should definitely make these.
They are perfectly delicious. They're really pretty, too.

This is Sierra. This little cutie was at my house Sunday. After dinner, my brother-in-law, Ricky, decided he wanted some cookies. I always wants me to make him something, yet he's always so mean to me. So, anyway, I made chocolate chip cookies. My favorite! I put in lots of chocolate chips. Sierra saw all of my sprinkles and insisted I put some sprinkles in the cookie dough.

I didn't know how well everyone else would react to sprinkles in the cookies, so I decided to make her a special cookie. A special cookie for a special little girl just had to be in the shape of a heart. She loved it! She actually gave it a thumbs up, so I guess I did good.

Here is the recipe I use:

♥ Chocolate Chip Cookies ♥from the KitchenAid Baking Companion Cookbook

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
2 eggs
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Place sugars, butter, eggs and vanilla in mixer bowl. Attach bowl and flat beater to mixer. Turn mixer to Speed 2 and mix about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape bowl. Turn to Speed 4 and beat about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape bowl.

Turn to Stir Speed. Gradually add baking soda, salt and flour to sugar mixture and mix about 2 minutes. Turn to Speed 2 and mix about 30 seconds. Stop and scrape bowl. Add chocolate chips. Turn to Stir Speed and mix about 15 seconds.

Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake at 375F for 10—12 minutes. Remove from baking sheets immediately and cool on wire racks.

VARIATIONS: 2 cups raisins, coconut or chopped nuts may be substituted for chocolate chips. ***I always add a few chocolate chunks to the top for my chocolate flavor. I also added M&M's in some of these.

Amelia, again

I have this little book. It's very old.

In fact, it's as old as I am.
This book was a gift to me from my Aunt Jo the year I was born.

It is a hard book which, I guess, is the reason it's held up so well over the course of 26 years (apart from the crayon scribbles in various places).

The pictures are so cute, and the animals are adorable.
You raise a flap to find out who lives in each house.

I'm amazed that I've kept up with this little treasure for so many years.
This is one of my favorite things.

Pink Photo Album

I got this photo album at Big Lots the other day for $1.
The inside was falling out, and the front cover was bent.

So, I took this piece of scrapbook paper, cut it to size
and glued it to the album with some E6000 glue.

Now I have a pretty, one-of-a-kind album.
I'm going to use it to hold pictures of my cakes.

Books...& a Library

This is my bookshelf.Anyone that knows me knows I love books.
I often find myself just glancing at my bookshelf for no apparent reason.
I guess the only explanation is that books just make me happy.

What would really make me happy would be to have a library like the Beast had in his castle. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite animated movie. And my heart always skips a beat when I watch the library scene! All those books...oh JOY!Image Credit

Sometimes I am very easily distracted. If I'm doing something, it's not uncommon for me to stop in the midst of what I'm doing and start something else. This is especially true when a good book is involved. I can just sit and read for hours regardless of what's going on around me.

Pepper in Some Hope

By now I'm sure everyone realizes that today is the first day of September. I think September is probably my favorite month because it means the start of Fall, which is my favorite season. September also means the beginnings of cooler weather and leaves changing their wardrobe to flaunt the beautiful colors of the season. This is my most favorite time of the year!

The thing I like most about the month of September, though, is that it's National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. And that means eating at Chili's...a lot. You see, Chili's is one of St. Jude's big sponsors. In 2002 Chili’s began The Create-A-Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer program. Every year during the month of September, when you eat at Chili's, you can color a pepper and make a donation to St. Jude. They hang all of the peppers on the wall throughout the month. And on the last Monday of September, Chili's donates all (100%) of thier profits to St. Jude.

In 2006, Chili's announced plans to raise $50 million over a 10-year period, the largest single partner donation in the history of the hospital. In honor of the partnership, a state-of-the-art-building was named the Chili's Care Center. The center houses the Department of Radiological Sciences, inpatient activities areas and research laboratories. The Chili's Care Center was completed in November 2007. Now the children of St. Jude benefit from more sophisticated diagnostic imaging technologies and more precise radiation therapy.

For the record, they have already raised more than $25 million.

My Favorite Movie

If you've read my About Me section on the right, you know that I love movies, especially old classics. I absolutely love the actors of the old movies. They really knew how to act. Cary Grant has always been one of my favorites. There was just something about him (maybe it's the accent) that always drew me in. Suave and debonair were the words they used back then to describe this type of man.

This has been my favorite movie for a while now. When I was younger we had the movie on VHS, and a few years ago I bought it on DVD. Many people have never seen this movie, but if you've ever seen Sleepless in Seattle, you've seen at least a few bits and pieces.

Cary Grant plays Nicky Ferrante who is known around the world as a playboy. The movie begins with radio stations in several different countries announcing that Nicky is engaged and set to be married when he returns from a trip to Europe. It is on this return trip from Europe, on a cruise ship on it's way to New York, that Nicky meets Terry McKay, a beautiful young woman who is also engaged. They begin to run into each other all over the ship leading everyone to believe they are having a secret affair. Friendly conversation leads them to getting closer to each other with each passing day.

By the end of the trip the two have fallen deeply in love despite the fact that they are both still engaged. On the final day on the ship, just as they are about to dock, Nicky and Terry decide that they will put off thier weddings until 6 months. When 6 months has passed, if they still love each other, they will meet at the top of the Empire State Building. If they both show up, then they will marry each other.

Of course, nothing ever goes as you plan or hope. Tragedy has a way of striking when you least expect it. Sometimes you have to keep on moving despite wanting to just sit down and give up. No matter what happens, remember, love will always conquer in the end!

The above scene has always made me sad. It is the final day on the ship. That morning Terri finds Nicki and they talk about their plans. This is when they decide that they will meet 6 months from that date at the top of the Empire State Building on the 102nd floor since it's "the nearest thing we have to Heaven in New York". It's a sweet scene, yet at the same time it's very sad because you don't know what lies in store for them. And it's got to be hard parting from someone you love so much not knowing.

A piece of trivia: According to IMDb, this movie "was voted the #5 greatest romance of all time by the American Film Institute".

I just realized that this is the final season of one of my favorite shows: Monk. I came across this on the USA Network website. It is the Monk Phobia Dictionary. According to the website:

Monk suffers from 38 documented phobias, but that number grows by the episode. With the help of the Monk Phobia Dictionary, you can discover new fears for Monk or help diagnose a few of your own.

I've always loved Polaroid cameras. A few weeks ago I found my Mom's old Polaroid. These things bring back memories. Too bad the film is so hard to come by, not to mention a bit expensive. I could have so much fun with this thing!

I've seen a few people use the Poladroid program.
I might have to play around with it a bit, at least until I can get some film.

He celebrated his 57th birthday Saturday.

Can you believe it? I actually had help on this one. I didn't have to do it all by myself. Here's me and Shawn with the cake. His Dad cut his head off. =]

We always have Dad a birthday party at church. I was going to make this cake, since my Dad is a carpenter, but I didn't think it would be the right size for the amount of people we would be feeding. So, we improvised.Dad said he didn't really care about having a party this year because some things happened at the last party that really hurt him. The church people assured him this one would be different. And they were right! We have a wonderful church family! I wish I could personally thank each and every one of them (new and old) for sticking by my parents and family for the last few months. Maybe I will...one day soon.

Some Favorite Toys

I guess these could be considered some of my favorite toys because I've kept them all these many years. When I was 3 (I think), we moved to Texas. We lived there for 5 years while my Dad pastored a church. Most of these toys I got during this time. This was in the late 1980's, so I suppose some of these toys could be considered antiques.

I remember getting this bear at the dollar store. She came with a wedding dress, veil, pink shoes and ribbon. As you can see, somewhere along the way she shed her dress and veil. I got this Bambi in a Burger King kids meal when I was about 6 or so. Me and my sisters all got one, but I think I might be the only one that kept mine. I'm just sentimental like that.It goes perfectly with this book that my pre-k teacher, Ms. Sylvester, gave me when I was...well, when I was in pre-k. That was many long years ago.

I've always loved this tiny book. It's size is just adorable, and the puppies are too cute! I always liked the Pound Puppy stories because the "big dogs" always took up for the unfortunate ones. It's always good to lend a hand to those in need.

Oatmeal Cookies

I've been eating these for breakfast this a.m.
This is one of my favorite cookies. They are so easy to make and oh, so delicious. If you like oatmeal. Someone informed me last night that they don't like oatmeal cookies, but he does like every other cookie and cake that I make and bake. So, maybe he'll like this if he tries them.

Quaker Oats Famous Oatmeal Cookies

Ingredients:
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup trans-fat free vegetable shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups Quaker® Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening and granulated sugar on medium speed of electric mixer until creamy. Add egg, water and vanilla; beat well. Add combined oats, flour, salt and baking soda; mix well.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Store tightly covered.

My oldest niece, Madalyn, celebrated her 11th birthday last week. She told me all the way back in January what kind of cake she wanted. We even sat down together and drew it all out. Her Mom (Dala) ended up changing a few things, so it was sort of a surprise to Maddy.

This is my sister, Dala. She is the 2nd oldest. About 2 weeks ago she became a year older. I decided the night before her birthday to make her a simple cake.
Simple it was.

When I asked, she said bright pink and turquoise were her favorite colors, so that's the colors I used. I also used, for the first time, my cake stand that I bought at Target after Easter for only $2. That was a happy day!

I bought these funnels a few weeks ago at Michaels.I was certain I could use them for something.

Then I saw this:
The instructions are on the back.
Just take the funnels, some delicious chocolate chips,
some foil, two small strips of paper...

and you have your own, personal giant kisses!

Perfect if the one you love is a chocolate lover.

Ruffly Headband

I found this tutorial for a simple, beautiful little ruffly headband.

So, naturally, I had to make me one.

I'm really loving ruffles right now.
I want to buy every ruffly shirt that I see, and I've been seeing many.

I had already made this flower from the same fabric.
Now I have a matching set!
